Background and Purpose
The risks of climate change grow with the accumulation of greenhouse gasses. Risk can be reduced but not eliminated by reducing emissions, and the world faces ever more difficulties in managing emissions. As a result, Climate Engineering, i.e. the deliberate large-scale modification of the Earth’s climate system to mitigate the rise of global temperature levels, is receiving increasing attention within the scientific community as well as in society.

About the summer School
For this reason, the University of Heidelberg, Germany, the University of Calgary, Canada, and Carnegie Mellon University, USA, are jointly organizing an annual series of transdisciplinary summer schools on Climate Engineering. The summer school will bring together students and young scholars working on all aspects of climate engineering with some of the field’s leaders.
The first summer school, organized by the Marsilius Kolleg of the University of Heidelberg, will be held from July 12th to July 16th, 2010 at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law Heidelberg (Im Neuenheimer Feld 535, D-69120 Heidelberg).

Admission and Application
The number of participants is limited. To apply, please submit a short (about 1 page) letter including a statement of interest, affiliation and field of work, also include a short letter of recommendation. The summer school is free of charge. Costs traveling and lodging have to be covered by participants. A limited number of travel scholarships will be granted to cover costs up to 1000 EUR, request for travel support should accompany the application.
The deadline for applications is May 31st 2010
